COLLEGE PREP MYTHS

1.  "Colleges like to see a lot of extra-curricular activities on your application."
Wrong.  Colleges are looking for experiences that demonstrate your maturity, leadership potential and promise of success in the field you intend to study.  No one is so naive to think that a 3rd string punter on the JV football team is gaining much from that extra-curricular "activity".  Even if colleges did, busy-ness is not spiritually healthy.

2.  Small Colleges are Better than Large Universities
Wrong.  This is an advertising half-truth used by small colleges to attract students.  Every large university is composed of a number of small colleges all under one roof.  Sure, freshman courses may be large, but by the time the student settles into his or her major studies, classes shrink and students enjoy intimate relations with professors and classmates.  Plus, the students at the large university enjoy the benefits of the campus resources.  That's not to say small colleges aren't great!  We are only warning that the "small colleges are better" line is untrue.

3.  SAT Scores Don't Matter that Much in College Admissions
Wrong.  This is true at elite schools where just about every student applying has a very high score.  Once you meet the school's minimum score, only then do SAT scores no longer matter.  As long as every college advertises their average SAT scores, you can be sure that they will not admit students who bring that number down.

COLLEGE SPOTLIGHT

2

Belmont Abbey is a private Catholic college in the Charlotte area of North Carolina located on the grounds of the Benedictine monastery, Belmont Abbey.  While the college is over 130 years old, we highlight this college not for its history, but for its future.

Under president Dr. William Thierfelder (a homeschooling Catholic father of ten), BAC is making bold strides to restore the liberal arts core of Catholic education and cultivate a spirit of Catholic excellence and virtue on campus.  Being the closest Catholic college to Charlotte, we look forward to supporting BAC through the years.  Plus, BAC is home-school friendly.

CLAA & COLLEGE PREP

College admissions requirements are written with the assumption that most students will be coming from schools that follow a curriculum based on that of the public schools.  These are very low academic standards which simply do not apply to the level of studies pursued in the CLAA.

Our students do not begin college prep studies in high school.  They begin them on the first day of study when they are often only 7 or 8 years old.  Moreover, our courses are equivalent to multiple courses in modern schools.

Nevertheless, we provide each student completing our program with two transcripts:  one in terms of the classical liberal arts curriculum and another in terms of the modern curriculum.  Seeing the details of the classical studies program in terms of the modern schools' courses is quite impressive.

The CLAA provides every student with rigorous admissions test prep to ensure that the students' learning is manifested by testing.

Lastly, the Academy provides clear reference letters and course descriptions for graduating students that allow colleges to understand the level of study and rigorous nature of assessment to which our students are subjected.

SAT TIPS FROM ARISTOTLE

Writing an SAT essay requires only 2 steps:  (1) stating your judgment, and (2) proving it.  To prove your opinion you can use examples or enthymemes.  But do you know what enthymemes are?

Enthymemes are carefully designed arguments that allow the reader to foresee the conclusion.  These are the most persuasive of all arguments.
