THE CLAA AND YOUR FAMILY

Ideally, students begin their study of the classical liberal arts when they begin their schooling and continue in it throughout their preparatory studies. However, for many students this is not possible.   Many families are learning of the CLAA with older children and ask us, "What should WE do?"  I would like to provide recommendations for several different scenarios.

FOUR-YEAR PREPARATORY PROGRAM

If you have a child who would be entering his freshman year of high school and begin preparation for college admission, you would have four years to work with.   This program assumes that an intelligent older student is working diligently for four full years.

Year I Year II Year III Year IV
RELIGION Classic Catechism III Classic Catechism IV Daily Religion Daily Religion
TRIVIUM Classical Grammar IA Classical Grammar IA/IIA Classical Grammar IIA Classical Grammar III
Classical Grammar IB Classical Grammar IB/IIB Classical Grammar IIB Classical Rhetoric
Reasoning I Reasoning II Reasoning III Reasoning IV
QUADRIVIUM Classical Arithmetic Classical Arithmetic Geometry Geometry
ENRICHMENT World Chronology I World Chronology II World Chronology III World Chronology IV
Music Theory I Music Theory II Drawing I Drawing II
Music History Music History Art History Art History
PHILOSOPHY Natural History I Natural History II Natural Philosophy Moral Philosophy

Supplementation may be needed to satisfy your state's diploma requirements, or to qualify for admission to a specific program at a specific college or university.  For example, this program would probably not suffice for a student applying for admission to a university engineering program, which would expect at least one year of Calculus.

SIX YEAR PREPARATORY PROGRAM

If you have a child who would be in middle school, you would have six years to work with.   This program assumes that a maturing and intelligent student is working diligently for six full years.

Supplementation may be needed, as explained above.

MORE THAN SIX YEARS?

If you have more than six years to study with of the CLAA, the aim does not change.  Students must make the same progression, but there is more time to do so.  This is why we say that, ideally, students will begin early--it simply makes the progression more pleasant.

Since there is more time to make progress in the core curriculum, opportunity arises for work in writing, literature, additional languages, etc..  That will, of course, be determined by the abilities and interests of individual families and will be addressed by us in those situations.

If you have any questions about this sort of real-world planning with the classical liberal arts, please do contact me.

God bless,

William Michael
