Since the 1500s, education has increasingly neglected the meat and potatoes of education and has tried to raise students on gravy and butter. "Encyclopedic" studies have replaced the study of the liberal arts because of a false believe that "knowledge is power", which was famously spoken by Francis Bacon, the father of the Scientific Method. On this flawed philosophy modern education is based.
The CLAA recognizes the importance of studies that supplement and enrich core the liberal arts curriculum. We offer a carefully chosen selection of "cognate" courses for students who are well-established in their core coursework. We offer these "cafeteria-style" for parents to select as they judge best.
Please don't underestimate the richness and quality of these courses! By saying they are not "core" courses, we do not mean they are not of very great benefit to our students. You'll see.
RELIGION
In addition to our excellent core courses in religion we offer the following cognates:
Courses available:
Introduction to Religious Life (Coming Soon)
Saint of the Day (2011)
LANGUAGE ARTS
The CLAA's Trivium courses provide the rigorous, systematic instruction necessary for master of the language arts, but students engaged in those studies may enjoy our language arts cognate courses, which enrich and bring those studies to life.
Courses available:
CLAA Writers' School
Classical Vocabulary
Linguistics (2012)
HISTORY
Cicero famously said that "a man who does not know what came before him remains forever a child" and we are careful to provide our students with excellent historical instruction. We do this through what are called the "two lenses" of history:
Courses available:
World Chronology
World Geography
Catholic Church History (2012)
American Government (2012)
LITERATURE
In 2012, Mr. Michael will begin an enjoyable course program for CLAA students that leads them through much of history's greatest literature. These courses introduce students to the classics in their original languages, so they should not be confused with modern "Great Books" courses that miss the whole point of literary studies: the language of the masters. These studies are analytical, intended to help students improve their writing by imitating the virtues of the best authors, but also edifying for Christian students. We will begin with English LIterature and, as our students progress through their classical studies, move into Latin and Greek literature.
No matter what, we will be moving through Shakespeare's Histories in English over the next three years:
Courses Available:
Shakespeare, Richard II (2011)
Shakespeare, Henry IV, Pt. 1 (2012)
Shakespeare, Henry IV, Pt. 2 (2012)
Shakespeare, Henry V (2012)
Shakespeare, Henry VI, Pt. 1 (2013)
Shakespeare, Henry VI, Pt. 2 (2013)
Shakespeare, Henry VI, Pt. 3 (2013)
Shakespeare, Richard III (2013)

NATURAL STUDIES
Throughout history, classically educated students studied the natural world in great detail, with wonder and worship (for for the creatures but for their Creator). The scientific method was not pressed upon schools until the 1600s. The CLAA is happy to offer instruction in authentically classical natural studies.
Courses available:
Natural History - Animals
Natural History - Plants (Coming Soon)
FINE ARTS
Many adults complain about the leisure activities their children seek out, but they do not complain enough about the neglect of instruction in the fine arts on their part. The Fine Arts must be understood in philsophy and purpose in order to be enjoyed and we are eager to provide CLAA students with a Christian intorduction to the history of the fine arts.
Courses available:
Music History
Art History
Traditional Drawing
PRACTICAL ARTS
Unfortunately, most schools today degrade the practical arts into learning what is needed to get a job in the "global workplace". The practical arts fulfill many more important roles in society than money-making. The CLAA offers courses in the practical arts that restore their dignity.
Courses available:
Self-Sufficiency (2012)
Sewing (2011)
Cooking (2012)
Breadmaking (2012)
Cheesemaking (2012)
Vegetable Gardening (2012)
Household Management (2013)
TEST PREP
The CLAA encourages students to participate in national tests and competitions offered to children of their age and aptitude. We offer several cognate courses to help students prepare for national programs:
Courses Available:
C.A.T. (2011)
National Latin Exam (2012)
S.A.T. (2012)
