Above:  William Michael led a group of CLAA fathers to Kingston, Jamaica in February 2009 to live and work with the Missionaries of the Poor.  In 2010, we seek to do greater things and the Lord has given us an awesome opportunity.

We cannot simply tell our children about the
Christian life or read about it in the lives of saints.
We must lead them into it by our example.

Above: This vacant building on the busy corner of East Street in Kingston, Jamaica can be used by the Missionaries of the Poor (1) to add room for new missionaries arriving from around the world for formation and service, (2) to host volunteers from overseas to help serve in the MOP care centers and (3) to evangelize and minister to the poor here in the murder capital of the world.  You can see local school students walking by on the right.  The building includes the 3-story section on the right (see below).  The building to the rear and left of this building is the MOP's Prince of Peace Monastery.   CLAA Missions has been called upon by Father Richard Ho Lung to raise the funding to buy this building.  This is our 2010-2011 mission and we beg you to help us.  We can buy this building with your help.

OUR 2010-2011 MISSION

The CLAA exists for one very simple purpose:  to raise children who know, love and serve God with the goal of resting happily with Him forever.  A true Christian education is not about preparing for a career, but transforming the world.  This is not as much a matter of talk and teaching as it is a matter of deeds and working.  There is work to do and it starts today--not tomorrow.

In 2010-2011, the CLAA along with all of its families and students has received an extraordinary challenge from one of Our Lord's most faithful servants alive today.  Father Richard Ho Lung, founder and superior of the Missionaries of the Poor has contacted us and asked us to help him do something wonderful.

The challenge is to raise $200,000--plain and simple. The money is needed to purchase and renovate a vacant 3-story building in the center of the ghetto of Jamaica, which the MOP need to house their brothers, host overseas volunteers and to evangelize the poor in the slums of Kingston.  If we raise the funds, the project will be done, for the MOPs do the construction work themselves.  Our part in this ministry is simple:  raise the funds.

WHAT WE ASK

By the fall of 2010, there will be 1,000 students in the CLAA and 400 families.  To raise the money needed for this project, we simply need to raise a one-time gift of $500 per family.

Some may react and say that is a lot of money--but this is not a lot of money!  Over 52 weeks, it is less than $10 per week.  We can build a missions facility for Missionaries of the Poor if CLAA families will sacrifice $10 per week!  We can do this!  Think of the junk that we spend this kind of money on and then imagine the joy of seeing this project completed.  Please, please join us.  We all can afford it--and the CLAA will help you afford it if you cannot.

Many families can simply write a check for this amount--we ask that they raise more.  Other families can give this by setting aside a fixed amount each month--we ask that they do so.  Other families can invent their own fundraising projects and raise the money over time.  Whatever the means may be, we ask you to make this gift with us!

CLAA BENEFITS TOO!

In addition to the obvious spiritual benefits of this mission project, CLAA families have additional benefits to gain.  This project is not merely a gift to the Missionaries of the Poor for their use far, far away.  The building that will be purchased and renovated will be used to lodge CLAA families that participate in the CLAA's annual missions trips to Jamaica.   Therefore, we will be investing in our own housing for future missions trips.  Imagine sending your children with a group of CLAA students and parents to live and work with the Missionaries of the Poor right in the midst of the poorest of the poor.  This building will make these future life-changing opportunities possible.

Please join us and allow us to make this gift to the work of our brothers serving the poor for us.

WHAT TO DO

To join us in our 2010-2011 Mission, simply complete the registration form and get to work!  The links above will take you to the form.  We will add you to our 2010-2011 Mission mailing list and provide you with updates on the progress of the mission, lessons and activities for your children and rewards for your participation.

This mission gives your family a wonderful opportunity to draw together and pursue a spiritual goal that will not only sanctify your family, but will gain for your the blessings and prayers of the Missionaries of the Poor.  You've read about gifts like these made throughout Christian history and the impact they've had--help us make our own!

Above:  Rear view of property on East Street in Kingston. Note the size of the 3-story section on the left--perfect for MOP dormitories and volunteer lodging.  Renovation will be done by the MOPs themselves once the funding is received.

Above: Satellite view of the Kingston ghetto.  MOP Prince of Peace Monastery and Corpus Christi Monastery are filled to capacity with brothers and hundreds more will be arriving in the next few years for MOP formation and service!  The addition of the East Street property (orange) will provide room for them, while allowing the MOP's influence to expand in the area.  This, dear friends, is how the Kingdom of God grows in an area filled with darkness!  Please help us.

APPEAL  FROM  FR. RICHARD HO LUNG, MOP

July 9, 2010

Dear William and Dania,

Blessings!

I am now 70 years old--also I am 50 years a religious.  I ask you for a gift for the salvation of souls--to purchase a building on East Street right behind Prince of Peace monastery.

Over the years in obedience to the word of God, I have molded Missionaries of the Poor in the name of Christ. I trust Him, I desire only one thing in life, to be true to the Lord.

In Matthew 10: 9 He tells us, "Take no gold, nor silver, nor, copper, in your belts, no bag for your journey."  Jesus tells us to care for the sick, the weak, the lepers, the mentally sick, the poorest and the most out cast of people. He also added, "you received without pay give without pay."

Missionaries of the Poor has labored greatly over the past 29 years of our existence. We care for, and house hundreds of the poorest of people in Kenya, Uganda, Haiti, Orissa, and Warangal in India, Cebu and Naga city in the Philippines, and Kingston Jamaica. Right now we are also establishing new missions in Monroe, North Carolina, and Routen, in Indonesia.

Our apostolates take in lepers, HIV victims, cripples, the blind, the mute, old men and women, discarded disabled children; in a word, the cast aways in society who have nowhere to live, no food to eat and no one to care for them.

Our community of brothers and priests is growing rapidly, and many lay people, volunteers and associates come to us to touch the nail marks and the wounds of the crucified Christ experienced in forgotten and broken humanity. We also need a soup kitchen for many hungry children in the area, some of them young girls ready to prostitute themselves for a lunch money or bus fare.

We don’t have space. We need your help, and the help of your CLAA families to purchase and repair a building near our monastery. It is 13,000 sq ft and badly needs repair. The cost is $200,000.00 for the building and the repairs. Most of the repair will done by our brothers.

I am not able to do much begging these days. There is too much work to be done, such as forming the brothers and caring for the poor.   Tell your friends that the building will be honored with the name of Jesus and your wonderful CLAA families.

With love and blessings,

WHAT  DO  THE  M.O.P.s  DO  IN  KINGSTON,  JAMICA?

Below, you can watch a video of the work of the Missionaries of the Poor in Kingston, Jamaica.  These are the very brothers we will be helping through this mission project!  These are the very poor who will be thanking God for our donations!  These are the very places we will be visiting on our future CLAA Missions visits.  Enjoy.
