FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Back to Writers' School Home

1.  Are CLAA Writers' School courses open to students from outside the CLAA?
All students are welcome to enroll in the CLAA's Writers' School courses.  However, our (brief) experience has shown that students from outside the CLAA are not prepared for our higher level courses.  The parents of a prospective student will need to demonstrate that their child has obtained the knowledge and skills required for most of the Writers' School courses.  Prerequisite and co-requisite courses are listed beneath each course.

2.  What age levels are the different courses meant for?
The CLAA makes no reference to student age or "grade level". Our courses are designed as part of a complete system of study for a student who has mastered the prerequisite courses.  No beginning student will be permitted into any course other than those marked
for beginners.
3.  Are the Writers' School courses required for CLAA students?
No.  The CLAA core courses teach the theory of the classical liberal arts curriculum.  CLAA enrichment courses enrich core studies.  However, it is our intent that all CLAA students who wish to gain the benefits of the classical liberal arts as they apply to writing complete the courses in the Writers' School.  The CLAA courses alone are not intended to produce good writers or speakers as they merely teach the theory and provide objective examinations and elementary exercises.
4.  What texts are used in the CLAA Writers' School courses?
There are no required texts to be purchased outside of the CLAA's Writers' School course materials.  Enrollment covers everything.  However, the course content is taken directly from classic texts on Rhetoric, Composition and Poetry from the history of classical education.  Sources include Aristotle, Cicero, Horace, Quintilian and more.  We assure you that NOTHING in our courses is made up of our own understanding.  We trust in the masters and in the sources and methods by which they learned the craft.
