CLAA Adult Studies Program
If you do not belong to the rising generation, you probably did not have an opportunity to receive a classical Christian education.  We are happy to help you claim a portion of the learning you missed through our adult study program.  This program is new in 2011 and more courses will be added shortly.  If there is a CLAA course that you would like to see added to our Adult Studies courses, please let us know.
AVAILABLE COURSES
AS Xenophon, Oeconomicus (William Michael)
A guided study of the Socratic dialogue about household management and agriculture.   Individual Registration
AS Biblical Studies I (Dr. Nathan Schmiedicke)
Adult studies version of Biblical Studies I for adults studying in the CLAA Adult Studies Program.   Individual Registration
AS 1 Year Bible Survey (Dr. Nathan Schmiedicke)
This is a one-year introduction to the Bible for adults.   Individual Registration
AS Holy Gospels (Dr. Nathan Schmiedicke)
This course introduces adults to the four Gospels: Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John. Students receive both what is unique about each Gospel and also how the four Gospels together give to Christians the whole picture of Christ, His life, teachings, death, resurrection, and ascencion into Heaven, plus the mission He gave to His Church until the end of time.   Individual Registration
AS The Story of Jacob and God (Genesis 25-35) (Dr. Nathan Schmiedicke)
This course is a very in-depth study of the Story of the relationship between Jacob and God in Genesis and the rest of the Bible.   Individual Registration
One Year Scripture Overview (Dr. Nathan Schmiedicke)
We encourage all CLAA students to commit themselves to the seven year Bible Study program both because this gives the Scriptures the time they deserve and it gives the student the time necessary to go deeply into the Scriptures and to build in themselves the habit of reading, praying, interpreting, and acting on the Scriptures thoroughly by the time they have completed their CLAA studies. But we realize that this commitment is not possible for all and so are offering a much-requested one-year overview of Scripture. In 40 lessons, Dr. Schmiedicke will lead students through an overview of each of the 73 books of the Bible showing how each fits into the whole of salvation history and drawing out the literal and spiritual meaning of each with attention to the order, clarity, and beauty of the Scriptures in God's plan to “draw all things to Himself” in Christ through His Church.   Individual Registration
AS De Doctrina Christiana (Dr. Nathan Schmiedicke)
A Study of St. Augustine's work "De Doctrina Christiana" on the interpretation of Scripture.   Individual Registration
Catechism of the Catholic Church I (Dr. Nathan Schmiedicke)
This course teaches the first part of the Catechism of the Catholic Church, which is the Church's most recent Universal Catechism.   Individual Registration
Biblical Studies II - Former Prophets (Dr. Nathan Schmiedicke)
This course leads students though the second major division of the Old Testament--Joshua through 2 Kings.   Individual Registration
AS Biblical Studies II, Former Prophets (Dr. Nathan Schmiedicke)
Joshua through 2Chronicles   Individual Registration

ABOUT THE CLAA ADULT STUDIES PROGRAM

The ancient Greek philosopher Plato said that, "Youth is the time for extraordinary toil." It is during the free years of youth that children are able to make progress through the most rigorous classical liberal arts studies because when the time comes for adults to work for a living, provide for a family, manage a household, etc., the leisure required for studies is very hard to find.

Therefore, though we may have missed many opportunities in our greener days to make gains in learning, there is much to be done after our school days have ended.  We are still to seek to know the Sacred Scriptures, as Simeon did in the temple during his last days.  We may still take up the study of language and culture, as Cicero did studying Greek as an old man after his career in law and politics was completed.  We may still take up the study of music as Socrates did, learning to play the lyre as an old man.  Adult studies are no strange thing historically--only in an age that considers learning to be something done for a job early in one's life.  The wise man is called a "philosopher" because he is always seeking wisdom.  The CLAA Adult Study Program makes that possible.

Adults can enjoy the same courses our full-time students do, yet without the rigor of required memory work and examinations.  Lessons are taken directly from our Academy courses, though made more approrpriate in place for adult students.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

1.  How do I enroll in an Adult Study course?
Answer:  To enroll in an adult study course, you simply use the individual student enrollment form, located here.  Normally, you will find a link to this form on each course page to make your enrollment as easy as possible.  If you need help, simply contact us.

2.  Can adults study in the Adult Study Program from anywhere in the world?
Answer:  Yes!  CLAA's Adult Study Program is a self-paced study program that can be used anywhere in the world.  All lessons and study materials are delivered through the internet to our enrolled adult students.  There is rarely any need for book purchases--all that's needed is internet access and some time.  There are no times for class meetings or deadlines for assignments.  You may take as long as you wish to complete a course and when you complete a course it remains accessible to you as long as you continue to study in the program.

3.  Are there deadlines or scheduled online lessons for Adult courses?
Answer:  No!   When you enroll in a CLAA Adult Study course, you will work at your own pace through the course.  There are no deadlines for lessons, assignments or the completion of courses.  All courses are self-paced, allowing you to study when your schedule allows.

4.  What's the difference between Adult courses and standard Academy courses?
Answer:  Academy courses taken by full-time CLAA students are extremely rigorous and can only be completed by diligent students with time required for them.  Academy courses are composed of several components, which include memory work and very difficult examinations.  Memory work assumes that that current learning is intended for future use, while adult students are normally studying for present use and therefore are not storing up knowledge for the distant future.  Academic students are also not permitted to begin a new lesson until their past lesson has been mastered and they have earned a perfect score on their lesson examination.  This is not required of adult students who are normally studying in their leisure for their own improvement.  In short, our adult courses are less rigorous in terms of assessment and memorization, yet the content is largely the same and, of course, they are taught by the CLAA's expert instructors.

5.  Do Adult Students have access to instructors for questions?
Answer:  Yes!  CLAA adult students receive all the same support and services our full-time Academy students receive.  You can ask your instructors questions and will be submitting optional assignments to instructors for feedback and discussion.  You can also discuss your lessons with other students taking the course around the world!

6.  What do CLAA Adult Study Program courses cost?
Answer:  The standard feed for CLAA courses is $125.00.  This covers course enrollment, online lessons, study materials, support services and more.  Fees are charged per COURSE, so once you enroll in a course, you do not pay anything again until you enroll in another course.

We offer a number of options for payment.  To help make these studies affordable we allow students to pay in 3, 6 or 10 monthly installments and charge no fees for these payment plans.  Payment may be made by check, credit card or through PayPal.  A $125 course can cost you only $12.50 per month.  However, if you are eager to study and for some legitimate reason cannot afford our courses, we offer charity discounts for any in need.

7.  I'm not good with computers.  Can I study the lessons in print?
Answer:  Yes and no.  All of the lessons you receive in your course can be printed and studied away from the computer.  You need nothing but the most basic knowledge of computers and the interent to complete these studies.  However, our lessons are delivered through the internet to your computer and, until we begin publishing our courses, computer use will be necessary.   If you need help getting your courses set up, we can help.
